Hydrocortisone is the pharmaceutical term given to the administration of the hormone cortisol by oral, intravenous or topical methods. The drug is used as an immunosuppressant in cases of severe allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis or angiodema, in cases where prednisolone is not applicable, such as cases in which patients need steroidal treatment but are unable to take medicine by mouth.

Hydrocortisone is also widely used for rashes arising from allergic reactions and inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis or ezcema. Creams for topical use are available without prescription (depending on area laws) in strengths 0.05%-2.5%, with higher strengths available only by prescription.
